Wolfgang Smith (born February 18, 1930 in Vienna ) is an American physicist, philosopher and mathematician . Smith is considered a philosopher as a representative of the traditionalist school .

Smith studied math, physics and philosophy at Cornell University with a bachelor's degree in 1948 (BA) and received a master's degree in theoretical physics from Purdue University in 1950 . He then worked at Bell Aircraft Corporation on theoretical spacecraft re-entry problems. He received his doctorate in mathematics from Columbia University in 1957 and was then at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , the University of California, Los Angeles and Oregon State University , where he was Professor of Mathematics. In 1992 he retired.

In addition to mathematics (especially algebraic topology and differential topology) and applied mathematics (aerodynamics, among others), it deals with theology, metaphysics and religion. He dealt with (Catholic) Christian philosophy ( Teilhard de Chardin , Thomism), but also in India with the Vedic tradition. He sees natural sciences as embedded in philosophical traditions.
