Wolfgang Stendar

Wolfgang Stendar (born May 23, 1929 in Hamburg ; † November 2, 2017 there ) was a German actor.

Life

Stendar grew up in Hamburg. He received acting training from Karl Wüstenhagen . From 1947 to 1949 he worked at the Stadttheater Itzehoe . There he had his first encounter with the set designer Renate Feuerbaum at the age of 19, whom he soon married. . From 1949 to 1953 he played at the Staatstheater Oldenburg and from 1953 to 1996 at the Schauspielhaus Zürich . 1960–1970 he was also a permanent member of the Burgtheater Vienna for half a season .

With the Burgtheater he had guest appearances in Warsaw, Moscow and Israel. With the Schauspielhaus Zürich he had guest appearances in Paris, Milan and Israel. Guest roles were at the Schauspielhaus Düsseldorf with Gustaf Gründgens , at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg, at the free Volksbühne Berlin, at the Kammerspiele Munich and at the Salzburg, Bregenz, Bad Hersfeld, Schwäbisch Hall and Jagsthausen festivals. He got film and television roles in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Stendar was also a speaker in concerts and operas as well as radio plays and literary programs on German-speaking channels. He has given readings in matinees and soirees at home and abroad with programs by classical and modern authors.

The return

In 1996 Stendar returned to his hometown Hamburg with his wife Renate Feuerbaum. The set designer, sculptor and painter, who was born in Dortmund in 1920, died there on February 27, 2020 at the age of almost 100. Before the childless couple moved from their long-term home in Zurich, the estate had been settled in favor of various cultural institutions at home and abroad. Part of the written estate was transferred to the Zurich City Archives.

Awards and honors

  • In 1979 Stendar received an award from the Canton of Zurich for cultural merits.
  • In 1993 he was honored with the "Golden Needle" from the Zurich theater.
  • In 1995 there was also the honor for services to the theater and literature with the "Federal Cross of Merit l. Class ”by the Federal President Roman Herzog .
  • 2004 Portrait bust of W. Stendar by the sculptor Renate Feuerbaum, presented in the Museum Europäische Kunst .
