Wolfgang Thoenes (born March 10, 1929 in Cologne , † March 3, 1992 in Mainz ) was a German pathologist .

Life

Wolfgang Thoenes, born in Cologne in 1929 as the son of a pediatrician and the pediatrician Fritz Thoenes , attended the Dom-Klostergymnasium in Magdeburg from 1947 to 1953, studied and did his doctorate in Mainz .

After graduating, he first completed his specialist in internal medicine in Heidelberg and then began his scientific training under Helmut Ruska at the Institute for Biophysics and Electron Microscopy in Düsseldorf . Thoenes then founded an electron microscope working group under Hans-Werner Altmann in Würzburg , which achieved international renown in 1960–69. His habilitation took place in 1963 on the basis of animal studies on the nephron after temporary ischemia. In 1970 he founded the Institute for Cytobiology and Cytopathology in Marburg and held the chair there until 1974. From 1974 to 1992 he was a professor at the Institute for General Pathology and Pathological Anatomy in Mainz . During this time he received further calls, including a. to Basel and Freiburg. In 1985 Thoenes discovered and named chromophobic renal cell carcinoma.

In 1984/85 he was president of the Society for Nephrology, and in 1989 of the German Society for Pathology . He was a member of the Academy of Sciences and Literature , editor of Virchow's archive -B “Cellular Pathology”, and co-editor of “Cytobiology” and “Clinical Nephrology”.

His scientific publications in nephropathology dealt with intratubular transport mechanisms, glomerulopathies , hemolytic uremic syndrome and amyloidosis , among other things . His description of the pathomorphology of kidney tumors as clear cell, chromophilic, chromophobic, pleomorphic renal carcinoma, Bellini duct carcinoma and oncocytoma in the form of the Mainzer or Thoenes classification was widely accepted and is still used today in pathological diagnostics.

Wolfgang Thoenes was married and had 3 children. He died on March 3, 1992 at the age of 63 in Mainz.
