Fritz Thoenes

Fritz Gustav Theodor Thoenes (born January 12, 1891 in Radebeul , † June 29, 1974 in Jena ) was a German pediatrician .

Live and act

Fritz Thoenes was born as the son of the factory owner (Carl) Gustav Thoenes (1851–1923). He passed his Abitur in Dresden in 1911 . He studied medicine at the universities of Jena , Freiburg and Munich with an interruption due to the First World War . Thoenes received his doctorate in Jena in 1920 and began his medical career in 1921 as an assistant to Stefan Engel in the children's clinic in Dortmund . In 1922 Thoenes was at the Physico-Chemical Institute in Leipzig and from 1923 to 1927 under Georg Bessau at the University Children's Hospital in Leipzig . In 1934 he was appointed associate professor and director of the children's clinic at Magdeburg-Altstadt Hospital . Fritz Thoenes led the clinic through the war and post-war period with the total destruction of the buildings and relocation to Haldensleben and Uchtspringe . In 1950 he took over a building complex with 424 beds on Wiener Strasse in Magdeburg .

The German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina appointed Thoenes in 1952 and became a member. In 1953 Thoenes followed a call to the chair of paediatrics at the University of Rostock and was appointed director of the university children's clinic. After his retirement , Fritz Thoenes moved to Weimar in 1959 , where he still worked as a pediatrician. In 1961 the German Society for Child and Adolescent Medicine made Thoenes an honorary member.

Fritz Thoenes died in Jena in 1974 at the age of 83. He is buried in the historical cemetery in Weimar .

Since 2010, the Fritz Thoenes Memorial Prize has been awarded to special achievements in the field of health and pediatric nursing at the Magdeburg University Hospital .
