Wolfgang Veenker

Wolfgang Veenker ( January 4, 1940 in Lüneburg - February 25, 1996 in Lüneburg) was a German Finnougrist .

Life

Wolfgang Veenker graduated from high school in 1959 and studied Finnish-Ugrian, Slavonic and phonetics at the University of Hamburg from 1959 to 1966 . He also attended events on Baltic studies, Romanian philology and Eastern European history. In 1966 he was with the thesis The issue of Finno-Ugric substrate in the Russian language in Gyula Decsy Dr. phil. PhD.

In the same year he started working as a research assistant at the Finnish-Ugric seminar at the University of Hamburg. Since the winter semester 1969/70 he was a lecturer at the same institute (Scientific Council or Senior Council). In 1977 he was appointed professor for the subject "Finnish-Ugric Philology". At the same time, he became the managing director of the Finnish-Ugric seminary, whose fate he has had a decisive influence on since 1971 as deputy and acting managing director. After the establishment of the Center for Hungarology in the Finnish-Ugric Seminary in 1988, he consequently also became its director.

Of his diverse tasks in the field of scientific organization, his activity within the Societas Uralo Altaica should be mentioned in particular . From 1963 to 1975 he was its secretary, from 1979 to 1994 its executive president, and from 1994 until his death its president.

His successor as professor for Finno-Ugric Studies in Hamburg was Eugen Helimski . As a doctoral supervisor , he has appeared at Soo-Young Park (1987), Sang-Hyup Lee (1989), Paula Jääsalmi-Krüger (1990) and Cornelius Hasselblatt (1990).

research

Since his dissertation, language contact research has been a focus of his academic work. He was also interested in the history of science in Finno-Ugric studies.

In his other publications, Veenker covered the entire breadth of the subject, concentrating primarily on the so-called "smaller" Finno-Ugric languages ​​(i.e. not Hungarian, Finnish or Estonian). Although he has also published on these languages, it was precisely those languages ​​that were largely unknown in the West that fascinated him and stimulated numerous researches: initially the central Finno-Ugric languages ​​in Russia such as Komi , Mari , Mordovian and Udmurt , but also the more distant, Obugian languages, Chantic and Mansi, partly spoken in Western Siberia . Finally, he also dealt with languages ​​outside of Finno-Ugric studies, such as B. the Paleosiberian languages Ketic , Giljak or Yukagir . The preoccupation with peripheral areas, to which nobody else devoted himself, was particularly close to his heart.
