Wolfgang Schlachter
Wolfgang Schlachter (born April 19, 1908 in Hamburg ; † January 4, 1999 in Göttingen ) was a German linguist and professor of Finno-Ugric Studies in Göttingen.
Life
After graduating from the Johanneum in Hamburg in 1927 , Wolfgang Schlachter , born with a severe visual impairment , studied German , Indo-European , philosophy and Slavic studies in Berlin and Göttingen . With a dissertation on "position of the adverb in the Germanic" he was in 1934 at the Humboldt University of Berlin PhD . His doctoral supervisor was Ernst Lewy .
Inspired by Lewy, Schlachter turned to Finno-Ugric studies . He first learned Hungarian at the Eötvös College in Budapest and then studied between 1936 and 1940 in Sweden with Björn Collinder and Wolfgang Steinitz, among others .
In 1940 he conducted field research on the now-extinct Malå dialect of Umesame in Swedish Lapland . His language documentation was published in 1958 in the form of a dictionary with a small collection of text contained therein.
Schlachter received his Venia Legendi in Finno-Ugric Studies at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich with a thesis on passive syntax in Sami in 1949. His teachers in Munich were Ferdinand Johann Sommer and Erwin Koschmieder . He also initially remained active in Munich and held, first as lecturer and then as Extraordinary Professor , linguistic lectures and exercises focusing on Lappologie and Finno .
In 1960 he took over the chair from Julius von Farkas at the Finnish-Ugric seminar at the University of Göttingen , where he researched and taught until his retirement in 1976.
Create
Schlachter was an important representative of Sami studies in Germany. He learned several other Finno-Ugric languages, and he spoke Hungarian and Finnish fluently. He was able to use this competence combined with his extensive knowledge of other foreign language philologies to mediate between Finno-Ugric studies on the one hand and diachronic and synchronous comparative general linguistics on the other. With his precise descriptive-linguistic approach, which sees language as a unity of form and content, Schlachter stood in contradiction to transformational grammarians of his time.
