Georg Ellendt (full name Georg Albrecht Bernhardt Ellendt , born May 6, 1840 in Königsberg (Prussia) , † July 26, 1908 ibid) was a German historian and high school director.

Life

Georg Ellendt was the son of the classical philologist Ernst Ellendt (1803-1863), who was director of the old town high school in Königsberg from 1838 . Georg Ellendt passed his school-leaving exam at this school on March 12, 1860. He then studied history, geography and classical philology at the University of Königsberg . After the death of his father in 1863 he took over his scientific estate.

On January 16, 1865, Ellendt began his probationary year at the Collegium Fridericianum in Königsberg, where he worked until the end of his life. On 18 February 1865 he was with a study on the history of the city of Haguenau in Alsace to Dr. phil. doctorate , on September 22, 1866 he passed the teaching examination in the subjects history and geography (for all classes) as well as Latin and Greek (up to lower level II). On October 1, 1867, he was appointed provisional full teacher. On July 1, 1867, he was given a permanent position as a full teacher (later as a senior teacher). From April 1, 1872, he was in charge of the institute's teachers' library. On August 11, 1891 he was appointed director of the Collegium Fridericianum (with effect from October 1, 1891).

In 1864 Ellendt edited three Homeric treatises from his father's estate . Another work by his father, the "Parallel Homer", could not appear as a whole for reasons of composition. The "Parallel Homer" contained a collection of parallel passages from the Homeric epics Iliad and Odyssey , which was unique at the time. Ellendt published some samples in 1867, 1868 and 1871.

Ellendt's own scientific publications mainly concerned the history of the Collegium Fridericianum and the canon of the school library . His catalog for the student libraries of higher educational institutions had four editions by 1905.

For his achievements, Ellendt was appointed grammar school professor on May 20, 1878 and was awarded the Red Eagle Order, 4th class (January 18, 1891) and the Knight's Cross of the House Order of Hohenzollern (June 1, 1898).
