Ernst Ellendt (full name Johann Ernst Ellendt , born February 18, 1803 in Kolberg , † April 27, 1863 in Königsberg , Prussia ) was a German classical philologist and grammar school director.

Life

Ernst Ellendt was the son of a merchant who moved to Königsberg in 1807 during the Napoleonic Wars . From 1811 the father worked as deputy principal in Memel . Ernst Ellendt was originally chosen to take over his father's business; instead he entered the tertia of the Collegium Fridericianum in Königsberg in 1818 and, like his older brother Friedrich (1796–1855), started a school career. From 1820 he studied classical philology, philosophy and history at the Albertus University in Königsberg with Christian August Lobeck , Johann Friedrich Herbart and Wilhelm Drumann . From 1821 Ellendt taught at the Höhere Töchterschule and from 1825 (after the teaching examination) at the Kneiphöfische Bürgererschule , which was converted into a grammar school in 1835. has been. In 1838 he was appointed director of the Old Town High School, which he directed with great success for 25 years. Ellendt's research focus was Greek literature, especially historiography and the Homeric epics. He edited a critical edition of Arrian's description of the Alexander campaign (1832) and published several essays. His studies on the Homeric epics were published after his death by his son Georg Ellendt (1840–1908) (1864); on the other hand, his main work, an annotated Homer edition with a collection of parallel passages, was only published in part and posthumously.
