Wolfgang Wegner (art historian)

Wolfgang Wegner (born January 19, 1913 in Frankfurt am Main ; † January 6, 1978 ) was a German art historian .

Wolfgang Wegner, son of the wholesale merchant John Wegner, lived in Stettin until 1928 , then in Munich , where he graduated from the Wilhelmsgymnasium in 1932 . In the same year he began studying art history , classical archeology and modern German literary history at the University of Munich and Frankfurt , and in 1939 he received his doctorate in Munich under Hans Jantzen . He then did military service until 1945. From October 1945 to November 1946 he was a volunteer at the Bavarian National Museum and the State Graphic Collection in Munich . From December 1946 he worked permanently on the graphic collection, first as a scientific employee, from 1955 as a curator, from 1961 as senior curator, from 1970 as a state curator. He retired in April 1975.

With the then director Peter Halm , he played a key role in the reorganization of the collection after 1945. He was responsible for the department of Dutch drawings and graphics and in 1973 published the inventory catalog of Dutch hand drawings.
