Wolfgang Weil

Wolfgang Weil (* 23. November 1912 in Klosterneuburg , † 1944 / 45 in Croatia ) was an Austrian chess player .

Life

Wolfgang Weil was born in Klosterneuburg . From a very early age he was interested in combination games. In the beginning his love belonged to the Japanese Go , later he devoted himself to the royal board game chess . Although numerous talented chess masters lived in his homeland, they could soon no longer be his equal playing partner. He joined the famous Hietzinger Chess Club in Vienna. Thanks to his hard work, he soon celebrated recognized successes and was placed in the Austrian team at the unofficial Chess Olympiad Chess Olympia 1936 in Munich . Here achieved the best result on the eighth board with 12 ½ points from 17 games (+10 = 5 −2). Weil was honored with the championship title for his successes.

In the Vienna City Championships in 1937, he took second place behind Albert Becker , as well as in the subsequent four-tier battle that Paul Keres won. Weil's best historical rating was 2520 in December 1937.

Weil was fatally injured by a shell hit in Croatia in the winter of 1944/45 during World War II .
