Wolfgang Weitschat (born November 3, 1940 in Berlin ; † November 26, 2016 in Bargteheide ) was a German geologist and paleontologist .

Life

Wolfgang Weitschat studied at the University of Hamburg Geology and Paleontology, was in Hamburg in 1973 with his thesis on the stratigraphy and ammonites of the higher Untertoarciums (upper Lias ε) of NW-Germany doctorate and then worked as a research assistant at the Geology and Palaeontology Institute. In 1978 he was appointed lecturer and curator at the Geological-Paleontological Institute and Museum of the University of Hamburg. Wolfgang Weitschat remained active in teaching and research as well as in looking after the museum in Hamburg until his retirement in 2006. The scientific focus of his research activities were the ammonites of the Triassic and amber research . Over the years, Wolfgang Weitschat undertook twelve scientific expeditions to Spitsbergen to research the biostratigraphy of the Triassic ammonite fauna and deepened his knowledge through further excursions to the Triassic of Austria, Greece, Italy, USA (Nevada), Hungary, Timor and Russia (Siberia ). Weitschat was the 1st chairman of the Association for the Promotion of the Geological-Paleontological Museum of the University of Hamburg until 2011 , within which he founded the Bernstein working group in 1993 with experts and laypeople . In 1998 he and Wilfried Wichard published the Atlas of Plants and Animals in Baltic Amber , which was published in English in 2002 and became a standard work.

His list of publications includes over 100 publications. Weitschat is u. a. Erstbeschreiber the Ostracodengattung Triadocypris Weitschat in 1983 with the type species Triadocypris spitzbergensis Weitschat 1983 and together with Aaron M. Bauer and Wolfgang Böhme the gecko genus Yantarogekko Bauer , Böhme & Weitschat 2005 with the type species Yantarogekko balticus Bauer , Böhme & Weitschat of 2005.

In his honor the cephalopod Gymnotoceras weitschati Monnet & Bucher 2005 and the taxon Oncotophasma weitschati Zompro 2007 from the order of the ghosts were named.
