Wolfgang van Vliet (born March 20, 1958 in Leeuwarden ) is a German politician ( SPD ).

Born in Leeuwarden, Netherlands, van Vliet came to Haßloch in the Palatinate as a baby and finally to Ludwigshafen am Rhein . There he graduated from high school in 1975 at the Carl-Bosch-Gymnasium and then studied law at the University of Mannheim as well as Russian and English at the Interpreting Institute of the University of Heidelberg . From 1990 to 2003 he had a law firm in Ludwigshafen.

Van Vliet joined the SPD at the age of 16 and was chairman of the Jusos . From 1984 to 1989 he was a member of the city council of Ludwigshafen am Rhein for the first time. In 1990 he became chairman of the local SPD association in Ludwigshafen-Nord / Hemshof. In 1999 he was re-elected to the city council, where he became deputy chairman of the SPD parliamentary group in 2002. In 2003 he became an alderman for social affairs, integration and sport. In 2006 van Vliet was elected chairman of the Ludwigshafen SPD. In 2009 he ran for the office of Lord Mayor for his party, but lost 37.6 percent to incumbent Eva Lohse . In 2010 he was elected mayor by the city council, making him the first deputy mayor. Van Vliet took office on July 1, 2011 and held it until the end of 2017. Since January 2018 he has been head of GAG Ludwigshafen .
