Dewclaw
The dewclaw or anal toe , often also called wolf's claw in dogs , is a first toe found on the inside of the hind legs in some animals, such as Therizinosaurus , which does not come into contact with the ground when walking.

Compared to the human anatomy, it corresponds to the big toe . When the Wolf's Claw is formed, it can appear in different forms. Usually the first phalanx ( phalanx proximalis ) is missing , in the most rudimentary form it consists of only one phalanx ( phalanx distalis ), which is enclosed by the claw .
Demarcation
The wolf's claw is to be distinguished from the thumb claw , the first toe on the inside of the forelegs. This is present in all dogs and numerous other mammals and has two toe joints. In short: the wolf's claw is at the back, the thumb claw in front.

Although the name suggests it, wolves do not have the wolf's claw, but some breeds of dogs do .
Legal
According to the German Animal Welfare Act of June 1, 1998, removal of the wolf's claws is prohibited ( Section 6 , Paragraph 1). It may only be removed in cases where this additional claw causes injuries. This is especially true when it just hangs in the skin without a bony connection.

In some breeds such as Berger de Brie or Beauceron , the dewclaws are present twice and also required by the FCI standard.
