Volodymyr Hryhorowytsch Barwinskyj ( Ukrainian Володимир Григорович Барвінський * 25. February 1850 in Schljachtynzi , Galicia , Empire of Austria ; † 3. February 1883 in Lemberg , Austria-Hungary ) was a Ukrainian political activist, publisher, historian, sociologist, journalist, writer and Translator.

Life

Volodymyr Barwinskyj was born in Schljachtynzi near Ternopil as the son of a priestly family and the younger brother of Oleksandr Barwinskyj . In 1872 he completed a law degree at the University of Lemberg .

Barwinskyj was one of the founders of the Proswita in the late 1860s and one of the organizers and ideologues of the popular movement in Galicia . Between 1876 and 1880 he published the newspaper Pravda and in 1880 he founded the largest Ukrainian newspaper in Galicia Діло ("Dilo") , whose editor he was until 1883. In 1880 he organized the first Ukrainian National Council in Lviv. Volodymyr Barwinskyj died in Lviv in early 1883 and was buried in the Lychakiv Cemetery.
