Oleksandr Hryhorowytsch Barwinskyj ( Ukrainian Олександр Григорович Барвінський * 6. June 1847 in Schljachtynzi , Galicia , Empire of Austria ; † 25. December 1926 in Lviv , Second Polish Republic ) was a Ukrainian politician, historian and educator.

Life

Oleksandr Barwinskyj was born in Schljachtynzi near Ternopil as the older brother of Volodymyr Barwinskyj in a Greek Catholic priestly family. Between 1865 and 1868 he studied history and Ukrainian language and literature at the Philosophical Faculty of Lviv University . In 1867 he began to publish the newspaper "Pravda" and during this time also got to know the composer Mykola Lysenko , who wrote his famous "will" at his request. After graduating, Barvinskyi received the post of deputy rector of the high school in Bereschany , where he tried to create Ukrainian school books. He received support from his personal acquaintances Mykola Lyssenko and Pantelejmon Kulisch . In 1888 he returned to Lemberg, where he worked as a professor at the teachers' college. In 1891 Barvinsky became a representative of Galicia in the Austrian House of Representatives in Vienna and remained so until the 10th legislative period .

From 1893 to 1897 he was chairman of the Shevchenko Scientific Society , which under his successor Mychajlo Hruschewskyj finally achieved scientific prestige and pan-Ukrainian importance. In 1918 and 1919 he was a delegate in the Ukrainian National Council and from November 9, 1918 to January 4, 1919 Secretary for Education and Religious Affairs in the State Secretariat of the Western Ukrainian People's Republic in the government of Kost Levyzkyj . After the end of the Ukrainian People's Republic, he withdrew from politics and devoted himself to literary research. In 1926 Oleksandr Barwinskyj died in Lemberg, where he was buried in the family grave in the Lychakiv Cemetery .
