Woodhall Spa is a village in Lincolnshire in England . It has (2009) an estimated 5000 inhabitants and is located in the East Lindsey district about 10 km southwest of Horncastle and about 24 km east-southeast of Lincoln .

Mineral spring

Woodhall Spa's mineral spring is unique in the world . It was found in 1821 while sinking a shaft in search of hard coal at a depth of 159 m. The spring water has six times more iodine and bromine than any other known mineral water . At around 5 mg / liter, the iodine content is a hundred times higher than that of seawater .

Spa and tourism

Some sick cows that had drunk from the spring water got well. This prompted local residents to drink and bathe in the water as well to seek healing. Then began to build a health resort (English Spa ) for drinking and bathing cures , and Woodhall Spa was created. In 1855 a railway connection was opened. Woodhall Spa got hotels and sports facilities and became an elegant Victorian resort. Two German aerial bombs were dropped on Woodhall Spa on August 7, 1943, one of which severely damaged the Royal Hydro Hotel . None of the soldiers billeted there were injured as they were all out of the house for the maneuver. The demand for the spa facilities declined after the Second World War, the rail link was closed in 1971, but the spa facilities were still in use until 1983, when the well shaft and parts of the well building collapsed and operations were stopped. Woodhall Spa has remained a holiday destination with many leisure activities.

Historical movie theater

Opened in 1922, Kinema in the Woods is the only cinema still in operation in Great Britain with rear projection onto a translucent screen. A Compton cinema organ is also still in use there.
