Horncastle is an English town with 6090 inhabitants in the district East Lindsey , Lincolnshire in the Middle East ( East Midlands ) of England. Its former economic importance as a typical market place for the region, especially for the livestock trade, has largely been lost today. The place still functions as a local center for the sparsely populated and heavily agricultural central Lincolnshire and has several schools and administrative facilities as well as a number of shops, restaurants and small industrial companies.

geography

location

Horncastle is located 27 kilometers east of the county town of Lincoln , in the southwest of the Lincolnshire Wolds . It is approx. 30 km to the North Sea to the east . The place is at the confluence of the two small rivers Bain and Waring. The Witham River runs south-west 9 km away.

history

The Romans built a fortress near Horncastle, which probably later became part of the fortified Saxon coast . Although fortified, Horncastle was not on an important Roman road. It can therefore be assumed that the river Bain was the closest main artery. Small remains of the walls of the Roman fortress are still preserved. The Anglo-Saxons called the city Hyrnecastre , which is where the current name comes from.

politics

Twin cities

Horncastle is a twin town to Bonnétable ( France ) and Wedemark ( Germany ).

traffic

Horncastle is at the junction of the A158 (from Lincoln to Skegness on the North Sea) and A153 (from Sleaford to Louth ). With a road network in central Lincolnshire that has not yet been well developed, Horncastle is a traffic jam-prone hub for holidaymakers and weekenders on the way to and from Skegness, especially during the summer months. There are regular bus connections to Lincoln and Skegness , among others . The national company National Express offers a daily coach connection to and from London ( Victoria Coach Station ).
