World Ocean Review

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The World Ocean Review is a comprehensive report that has now been published in six volumes and shows the state of the world's oceans , the interdependencies between the ocean and ecological, economic and socio-political conditions. It is supposed to inform the general public about the state of the seas without spreading bad news and disaster reports . The World Ocean Review appears in German and English.

The volumes are published in printed form by the non-profit association maribus at Mareverlag, founded by Nikolaus Gelpke . All issues are freely accessible as PDF files on the project's homepage or can be ordered there free of charge.

content

The contents of the World Ocean Reviews reflect the current state of science, according to their own statements. This was achieved through the close cooperation of the Cluster of Excellence " The Future Ocean " from Kiel, the International Ocean Institute from Malta and the publishing house Mare-Verlag. The German Marine Research Consortium (KDM) has also been a cooperation partner since the fifth edition. The topics dealt with in the World Ocean Review are very close to the research areas of the cooperating institutions. They are presented in detail, linguistically and visually, in an objectively understandable manner. The subject areas range from an introduction to the Earth's climate system , fossil fuels from the ocean and international law of the sea . The entire work is under the motto: "Living with the seas".

Scientists from the Kiel Cluster of Excellence "The Future Ocean" and many other national and international researchers have summarized numerous studies from climate and marine research in their reports . The "World Ocean Review" appeared for the first time in 2010 and is published at regular intervals. The scientifically secured findings are intended to serve all those who want to participate actively and well-founded in the current discussions in the field of marine research.

The first volume dealt with the topics of the ocean in general, but the other issues are devoted to more specific questions about our seas.

World Ocean Review Volume 1: Living with the Seas

chapter

1. The oceans, the engine of the global climate

This chapter gives an introduction to the complex climate system of the earth and especially to the interactions between the earth's atmosphere , cryosphere , ocean , lithosphere and biosphere .

2. How climate change is changing the chemistry of the oceans

Here, among other things, the connections between the CO 2 uptake of the ocean, ocean acidification and the associated dangers for the ocean ecosystem are explained on the basis of the latest knowledge. Furthermore, the effects of climate change on methane hydrates on the sea floor are discussed.

3. The uncertain future of the coasts

This chapter deals with sea level rise due to thermal expansion and the melting of land-bound ice and the associated hazards for many coastal regions. The anthropogenic influences in the coastal area are also discussed.

4. Ocean terminus - from pollution of the seas

From over-fertilization of the ocean to long-lived organic pollutants (e.g. POP = persistent organic pollutants) to garbage and oil in the sea, there are dangers for the ocean but also for humans. These problems are discussed factually in this chapter.

5. Effects of climate change on the marine ecosystem

Even small changes in the climate can have enormous effects on various organisms in different parts of the ocean's ecosystem. Such snowball effects are described here as examples. The spread of marine organisms from certain regions to other regions and their effects are also discussed.

6. From the exploitation of a living resource - fishing

This chapter first gives an introduction to the subject of marine fishing. The necessity of fish stocks for humans is discussed as well as the overfishing of these stocks. The causes and a possible improvement in fisheries management are also part of this chapter.

7. Mineral resources and energy from the sea

Fossil fuels , marine mineral raw materials , methane hydrate, and offshore production of regenerative energy hold great potential for people, but in some cases also dangers not only for the climate and the environment. All of this is covered in this chapter.

8. The sea - the world-wide transport route

This chapter deals mainly with economic aspects of world shipping, but also deals with the increasing threat of piracy and terrorism in global shipping.

9. Medical knowledge from the sea

Nowadays, not only can new active ingredients be obtained from marine organisms (for example for cancer therapy), but research into the causes of diseases can also be carried out. This chapter deals with the decoding of new substances, the research of diseases, some of which are very old, and the legal situation of marine medical research.

10. The international law of the sea - a potent set of rules

This chapter deals with the legal order of the oceans. Topics such as the protection of marine mammals and the legal situation of the national borders of the Arctic are explained in more detail here.

World Ocean Review Volume 2: The Future of Fish - The Fishing of the Future

The importance of marine fish and fishing for feeding the world's population is dealt with in a total of 5 chapters. Various questions are investigated, for example: How do marine ecosystems work? What significance does the food fish have for humans? What are the dangers of the steadily growing global use of fish?

World Ocean Review Volume 3: Raw materials from the sea - opportunities and risks

WOR 3 deals with the use of the world's oceans as a raw material supplier. The chapters deal with the production of natural gas and crude oil, which has been taking place for over 100 years, the still young topic of the mining of metals ( manganese nodules ), the potential future extraction of methane hydrate and the problems and dangers that arise from it.

World Ocean Review Volume 4: Sustainable use of our seas - from the idea to the strategy

The fourth volume of the World Ocean Review deals with the topic of sustainability in relation to the ocean. It deals with the definition of the term up to the concrete conceptual presentation for sustainable ocean development.

World Ocean Review Volume 5: The Coasts - A Precious Habitat Under Pressure

The fifth edition of the World Ocean Review deals with the coastal habitat and the diverse expectations that are placed on this habitat.

World Ocean Review Volume 6: Arctic and Antarctic - extreme, climate-relevant, endangered

The sixth edition of the World Ocean Review covers the Arctic and Antarctic. He describes the origins and discovery history of the polar regions, the role they play for the global climate, the observable changes in the flora and fauna as well as the sometimes dramatic consequences that climate change is causing in these extremely endangered regions.
