World of Padman ( WoP for short ) is a free comic - first person shooter . Originally WoP was a modification for Quake III Arena called "Padmod", which appeared for the first time in 2004 after two years of development. After the release of the source code for the Quake engine (the game engine of Quake 3 Arena) under the GNU GPL , the game was further developed and released in April 2007 as a standalone version . A first (also free) add-on was then released in the form of additional cards in June 2007.

The character Padman comes from the comic strip of the same name, which the comic artist and illustrator Andreas Endres alias "ENTE" designed for the monthly computer game magazine "Playstation Games". The comics were an integral part of the magazine from the first edition in early 1998 to the end of 2001.

Game world and game mechanics

Because the game originally appeared as a mod for Quake III Arena , the basic gameplay is quite similar to the original. However, the specific design differs from the typically gloomy atmosphere of a first-person shooter. The game world is mostly brightly colored and comic-like. The scene is z. B. the untidy rooms of a winding house. Many of the twelve maps were designed by Andreas Endres; Most of the maps are kept in the "Liliput-Style": The player sees familiar surroundings (kitchen, bathroom, garden) from the perspective of a Thumbnail (see also frog perspective ). The weapon stock is also unconventional and contains z. B. a bubble gum shooter ("Bubble G") that shoots sticky chewing gum, or a water pistol ("boaster") that shoots in an arc and moisten the hit area for a short time, causing a "slide effect".

Life points

Unlike in Quake III Arena , you cannot collect health items in WoP. You have two options to replenish your own life energy : Either you recharge it in special charging stations (i.e. stay there while the life indicator slowly fills up), or you collect the power-up "Revival" and enjoy the sight of yourself full display, here also above the initial maximum value up to twice the starting value.

Game modes

In addition to the game modes typical of the first person shooter genre such as Last Man Standing (in this case Last Pad Standing ), Free for All and Team Deathmatch , WoP includes two completely new modes:

• Spray your Color , in which you collect paint containers dropped by other players when you die and use them to spray your own logo on certain walls in dedicated “spray rooms”. You don't get points for kills, but only for sprayed logos.
• Big Balloon , here balloons that are distributed in strategic places on the map have to be "inflated" (ie held for a certain time) and then defended. This mode can best be compared with the Domination mode known from Unreal Tournament , or the flags in the Battlefield row.

A single player mode was planned, but was discarded again.

technology

The game graphics are detailed and technically relatively demanding, even if they do not make excessive demands on modern computers due to the somewhat older graphics engine . Another significant feature of WoP are the extremely heavily programmed bots that support all game modes. The game also supports its own modifications and custom maps, for which there is also a tutorial.

The game can run on several platforms (namely Windows , Apple Macintosh and Linux , the latter being particularly worth mentioning) and is supported equally everywhere. The source code is also available.

Reactions

WoP has been featured on many websites such as Mod DB, Slashdot and ESRreality. There were also reports in the German-language press and their online editions. The TV broadcaster MTV presented the game, GIGA even did it twice.

Depiction of violence

WoP is a completely pixel-blood-free game, the representation of violence is not excessive and is similar to that in a cartoon - the "killed" characters fall unconscious and disappear upwards as a shadowy figure. The humorous approach and the brightly colored graphics make this game one of the most family-friendly first-person shooters ever. For this reason, the game was the first first-person shooter based on the Quake 3 engine in Germany to receive an age rating of 12 years and over from the USK in December 2010.

history

Version 1.2 was released on December 6, 2007. Some bugs have been fixed and the game speed has been reduced a bit. In addition, a new map ("Glowstars Anteroom"), a new skin for the "MonsterPad" model and two new tracks have been added to the "Green Sun Musicpack". After a while, a map pack was also released that contains three additional maps from ENTE, namely Padgallery, Padcastle and Padcrash. Furthermore, there was a new music pack almost at the same time, which contains new songs by Mighty Pete.

Version 1.5 of WoP has been available since December 28, 2010. There were u. a. New game types, new maps, new player models, a new weapon and new powerups added.

Version 1.6 was released on December 17th, 2011.
