Worshipful Company of Grocers

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Worshipful Company of Grocers (also short: The Grocers' Company ) is one of the Livery Companies of the City of London . It ranks second among the 110 companies. It is one of the Great Twelve City Livery Companies . Her motto is " God Grant Grace ".

Members of the Guild of Pepperers , a religious and socially engaged brotherhood of merchants who traded in spices , gold and other luxury goods from Constantinople and the Mediterranean , which has existed since 1180 , formed a new brotherhood in 1345, which since 1373 as the Company of Grocers of London is known. In 1428 her status as the Livery Company of the City of London was confirmed by a Royal Charter . The company's task was to lay down rules for the quality and purity of the spices, as well as for certain dimensions and weights. Its members included the London pharmacists , who in 1617 founded their own company, the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries .

The plot of land in Princes Street, on which the present meeting place, the Grocers' Hall , is built, was acquired as early as 1427 and a first hall was built on. Like many other Livery Companies buildings, it fell victim to the Great Fire of London in 1666 . In 1694 a new building was built on the same site, which was rented to the Bank of England . The first director of the Bank of England was Sir John Houblon, himself a member of the Grocers' Company. In 1802 the second hall was replaced by a new building, but in 1887 it was decided to vacate the entire area again for a fourth building. This survived the air raids of the Second World War almost intact, but burned out completely in 1965, whereby a large part of the inventory was lost.

As part of their social responsibilities, the Grocers' Company established a public school for middle-class children in the London Borough of Hackney in 1876 . The previous architectural competition was won by the British architect Theophilus Allen . The The Grocers' Company's School was established in 1906 under the care of the London County Council passed, with the name in Hackney Downs School has been changed.

Outside of London, too, the Grocers' Company traditionally supports some schools, such as B. the public school founded in 1556 in Oundle , Northamptonshire or since 1614 "The Elms School" in Colwall , Herefordshire , both of which now bear the coat of arms of the Grocers' as the school coat of arms.

The Grocers' Company sponsors the British destroyer HMS Gloucester .
