Wuhling was a German noise rock - band of the 1990s in Berlin .

history

The singer and guitarist Anne Rolfs and the drummer Frank Neumeier began their musical collaboration in 1993. Rolfs was considered a newcomer in the independent scene, while Neumeier already had experience as a drummer for Caspar Brötzmann Massaker . Her first 7 ″ single Der Ort was released in 1994 as the third record ever on the Berlin label Kitty-Yo . Shortly after the recordings for this single, bassist Vicki Schmatolla left the band. After Rolfs and Neumeier had been looking in vain for a suitable new bass player for a long time, they decided to record their first album Spacebeige together. In April 1995 they went to Iain Burgess' black box recording studio in France, where Peter Deimel produced the recordings.

Heike Marie Rädeker, bassist at 18th Dye , heard the resulting tape and joined Wuhling in May 1995. With the new line-up, the band soon recorded the second single Mondsound / Dimdedimde in the Vielklang -Studio in Berlin. The recording was produced by Bruno Gebhard, recording manager at Caspar Brötzmann . This single moved the American label Touch and Go Records to sign Wuhling for an album. Wuhling recorded Extra 6 in a studio in Chicago , produced by Steve Albini . Extra 6 was released in April 1997, and Wuhling broke up soon afterwards. Anne Rolfs performed with jazz drummer Kevin Shea with her project Allroh from 2009 .

Wuhling's music stands between noise rock and minimal music . While guitar riffs , harmonies and the use of distortion were typical of independent music of the 1990s in the style of Yo La Tengo , the Wuhling sound gains its own style through the monotonous and apparently distant singing of Rolfs. In a review of 2009, the reviewer from Spex described Anne Rolfs as a “vocal perfectionist” and Wuhling's music as “disturbing emotional rock with noise elements”, which combines “into a remarkably clear whole”.
