description

The perennial herbaceous plant reaches heights of 2 to 10 centimeters. It is apparently bare, yet the leaf margin and calyx are densely covered with very short glands. The basal leaves are 2 to 4 centimeters long and up to 1 centimeter wide, ovate to lanceolate and pointed. Furthermore, they are dark green, shiny, stiff, not sticky and their edge is imperforate, cartilaginous and curled up when young.

The stem is bare and towers above the leaves, on it there are one to three stalked flowers . The bracts are reddish, linear, 4 to 10 millimeters long and usually longer than the flower stalks, but reach at most to the middle of the calyx. The calyx is also reddish, tubular and 6 to 12 millimeters long. There are short calyx teeth. The crown is 25 to 30 millimeters wide, light red to purple in color and its lips are frayed.

The flowering period extends from May to July.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 66.

Occurrence

The distribution area includes the Southeast Alps . Sulfen's primrose occurs subalpine and alpine at altitudes of 1200 to 2200 meters on limestone in stony lawns, on rubble and on rocks.
