The Vygosero ( Russian Выгозеро, Выгозерское водохранилище , Vygoserskoye Reservoir , Бобровое Bobrovoje , Finnish Uikujärvi ) is a freshwater lake in the Russian republic of Karelia north of the Onega Lake . With an area of around 1250 km², it is one of the largest lakes in Europe . The catchment area covers around 18,000 km². It includes 529 islands. The rivers Oberer Wyg , Woschma , Segescha and Onda flow into the lake . The mean depth of the Vygosero is only 6 m, the maximum depth 18 m. The largest city on the lake is Segescha .

The Vygosero has been part of the White Sea-Baltic Sea Canal since 1933 . From this point on it is used as a reservoir. The water level was artificially raised by several meters, which resulted in the flooding of large areas and made the lake significantly larger (original lake area 560 km²). In the early 1950s, the Ondskoje hydropower plant was built on the lower Onda . This is fed by the water of the Vygosero, which meets the White Sea-Baltic Canal 7 km downstream.

The multitude of organic material that ended up in the lake changed its ecology significantly. The species of fish that live in Vygosero today include Atlantic salmon , whitefish , pike and others.
