Xenon dichloride , XeCl 2 is an unstable compound of xenon from the group of chlorides . It is the only known compound between chlorine and xenon.
Extraction and presentation
The connection can be established by irradiating a xenon-chlorine gas mixture with microwaves . In an experiment an attempt was made to produce XeCl 2 · BCl 3 with the help of xenon, chlorine and boron trichloride . In the end only xenon dichloride was obtained.
properties
The compound is highly unstable and breaks down into xenon and chlorine after a short time. It is not clear whether the xenon dichloride is a correct chemical compound or whether the xenon only forms a secondary bond with the chlorine molecule. In the latter case, weak van der Waals forces would be assumed.
