Xiomara Alfaro

Xiomara Alfaro (born May 11, 1930 in Havana ; † June 24, 2018 in Cape Coral ) was a Cuban singer who was known as the "Nightingale of the Song" (El Ruiseñor de la Canción).

Alfaro began in the 1950s, at the same time as singers such as Olga Guillot , Celia Cruz , Omara Portuondo and Yma Sumac in the most famous cabarets Havana, Sans Souci, Tropicana and Montmartre, as an interpreter of bolero . In 1954 she appeared in Robert Rossen's feature film Bolero on the side of Silvana Mangano and Vittorio Gassman . She later moved to the USA.

Alfaro recorded about thirty albums, including some with Bebo Valdés and Ernesto Duarte Brito . Became popular Ernesto Lecuona Bolero Siboney in their interpretation. Other well-known pieces that she has interpreted are Moliendo Café, Niebla del riachuelo, Malagueña, Noche de ronda, Negra triste, Ochún, El manisero, Duerme negrita, Alma llanera, Mírame así, Mis noches sin ti, Nunca en domingo, Cenizas and Angelitos negros. She was married to the Panamanian pianist Rafael Benítez , who worked on her recordings as arranger and conductor.
