Xixiang chi ( Chinese  洗象池 , Pinyin Xǐxiàng chí , English Elephant Washing Pool  ), also known under the Chinese name Tiānhuā chányuàn (天花 禅院), is one of the most important Buddhist temples in the Emei Shan Mountains in the Emeishan area in the southwest Chinese province of Sichuan , one of the four sacred mountains of Buddhism in China . It is a national focus temple of Buddhism in Han Chinese areas . The facility is more than 2,000 m above sea level.

The monastery was founded in the Ming Dynasty , and the temple was expanded during the reign of Emperor Kangxi during the Qing Dynasty .

It is said that Bodhisattva Samantabhadra washed his elephant in a pond near a temple when he climbed the mountain and hence the pond got its name. "Night Moon over the Elephant Washing Pool" is one of the ten scenes of Emei Shan ( Emei shi jing ): when the moon shines brightly at night with the moonlight reflecting in the water, it shines like being an immortal in heaven.

Important buildings of the temple are the Maitreya Hall, Main Hall, Guanyin Hall as well as the “ Tripitaka Pavilion” (library) and guest hut.

The temple has been on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China (1-133) since 1961 . The temple is also on the Sichuan Province Monuments List .

In his guest hut there are twelve Nanmu wooden chairs from the time of the republic , the arms of which are inscribed with a political slogan of the warlord General Feng Yuxiang (1882–1948): “提倡 佛教 , , 人心 , 精诚 团结 , 实现 和平” (“Den Promote Buddhism, improve people, sincere solidarity in the republican spirit, achieve peace ”).
