Xu Caihou ( Chinese  徐 才 厚 , Pinyin Xú Cáihòu ; born June 1943 in Wafangdian , Liaoning Province , Republic of China ; † March 15, 2015 ) was a Chinese general and politician who was a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CCP ), has been a member since 1999 and vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission of the CCP and vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission of the People's Republic of China since 2004 .

He was an ethnic Han , a soldier since 1970, and graduated from the Electronics Department of Harbin Military Engineering School . In the People's Liberation Army , he worked at various levels, mainly in the General Political Department, one of the four main departments, most recently as its General Director from 2003 to 2005.

On June 30, 2014, it became known that he was charged with bribery and expelled from the Chinese Communist Party. His rank as general was stripped from him and he was discharged from the army. He was believed to have been under house arrest for months in connection with the allegations. In March 2015, the military investigative authorities opened a case against him. The proceedings were concluded on October 27, 2015 and the results of the investigation were handed over to the prosecution. With the death of Xu the case against him will be dropped. His illegally acquired property will be confiscated in accordance with the law.

Xu died on March 15, 2015 in an undisclosed hospital as a result of bladder cancer .
