Xu Kuangdi ( Chinese  徐匡迪 ; born December 11, 1937 in Tongxiang , Zhejiang ) is a Chinese university professor and politician of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) who was mayor of Shanghai from 1995 to 2001 . He was then President of the Chinese Academy of Engineering between 2002 and 2010 .

Life

After attending Hangzhou High School, Xu Kuangdi began studying at the Metallurgical Department of the Beijing Iron and Steel Institute and graduated in 1959. He then served from 1959 to 1963 as a research assistant at the Beijing Institute of Iron and Steel and visited the end of the Cultural Revolution from 1971 to 1972, the Management School '7. May ”in Fengyang . He then worked from 1972 to 1980 as a research assistant and, most recently, lecturer at the Metallurgical Department of the Shanghai Institute for Mechanical Engineering . He was then vice dean and finally dean between 1980 and 1986and Professor of the Metallurgical Department of the Shanghai Mechanical Engineering Institute. During this time, he became a member of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in 1983 . He also worked in Sweden between 1984 and 1985 and was awarded a national prize for developing a stainless steel for aircraft production.

Xu Kuangdi was then Executive Vice President of Shanghai Polytechnic University from 1986 to 1989 and Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Public Health from 1989 to 1991 and head of the Shanghai Department of Higher Education. He was then head of the Shanghai Planning Committee from 1991 to 1992, and in 1992 also became a member of the Standing Committee of the Shanghai Party Committee. At the XIV Congress of the Communist Party of China (October 12-19, 1992) he became a candidate for the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CCP). He was vice-mayor of Shanghai from 1992 to 1995 and then from 1993 to 1994 first director of the Committee for Labor and Wages and from 1994 to 2001 he was deputy secretary of the Shanghai Party Committee.

At the same time, Xu Kuangdi replaced Huang Ju as Mayor of Shanghai in February 1995 . He held this position for six years until December 7, 2001, when he was succeeded by Chen Liangyu . In addition, he became a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1995 , in which he belongs to the Department of Chemical, Metallurgy and Materials Engineering . In 1996 he also became Honorary President of the Chinese Red Cross and Vice President of the Association of Mayors.

On the XV. Congress (September 12-19, 1997), Xu became a member of the CCP Central Committee for the first time and belonged to it after his re-election at the XVI. Party congress (November 8-14, 2002) until October 2007. After he became secretary of the party leadership group of the China Academy of Engineering in 2001, he also replaced Song Jian as president of the China Academy of Engineering in 2002 . He held this position until 2010 and was then replaced by Zhou Ji in June 2010 . At the same time, from 2003 to 2008, he was Vice-Chairman of the National Committee of the Political Consultative Conference of the Chinese People .
