Xysticus audax is a species of spider from the family of the crab spiders (Thomisidae). The species iswidespread and commonin Central Europe .

features

The species is one of the medium-sized crab spiders. Males have a body length of 3 to 5 mm, females reach 6–8 mm. Both sexes are very variable in color, the basic color can turn out from white to brown and red tones to almost black, whereby the front body ( prosoma ) and rear body ( opisthosoma ) can have the same or a different basic color.

The prosoma is dark on the upper side, in the middle, as with many representatives of the genus, there is a broad, light longitudinal band, which shows a darkly contrasting spot that is broad at the front and tapering to the rear, i.e. approximately V-shaped. In contrast to many other species of the genus Xysticus, this pointed spot ends clearly in front of the rear body. The opisthosoma, like the prosoma, is dark on the sides and shows a broad, light longitudinal band in the middle; the dark drawing of the pages is segmented by light transverse bands. The legs, which are quite uniformly colored, usually show the same basic color as the prosoma and are darkly spotted in the color of the dark prosoma sides.

In Central Europe there are a number of very similar species of the genus; the reliable determination of the species is therefore only possible by microscopic examination of the genital organs (genital morphologically).

distribution and habitat

Xysticus audax colonizes almost the entire Palearctic from Iceland and Portugal in the west to eastern Siberia and Japan in the east. In the north-south direction, the distribution extends from Scandinavia to Greece and in the east to south to China . The distribution area includes the boreal to Mediterranean zone. Xysticus audax occurs throughout Europe. The species does not inhabit forests of any kind that are too wet here. It usually lives there in higher vegetation in the bushes and in the treetops.

Danger

The species is widespread and medium abundant in suitable habitats. In Germany it is classified as "safe" in the Red List .
