Yuko Emoto

Yuko Emoto ( Japanese 恵 本 裕子 Emoto Yuko ; born December 23, 1972 in Asahikawa ) is a former Japanese judoka . In 1996 she was Olympic champion in the light middleweight division, in the weight class up to 61 kilograms.

The 1.61 m tall Yuko Emoto took third place at the Asian Championships in 1993. At the Asian Games in 1994 she reached the final and won the silver medal behind the South Korean Jung Sung-sook . In her only fight at the 1995 World Championships against the Czech Michaela Vernerová , she was eliminated after eleven seconds. A month and a half later, like in 1993, she won a bronze medal at the Asian Championships.

At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, she defeated the Russian Tatyana Bogomjagkowa in her first fight by waza-ari (great score). In the last sixteen she won against the Frenchwoman Catherine Fleury-Vachon by yusei-gachi (referee decision). Emoto won the quarter-finals against Israeli Yael Arad through waza-ari, in the semi-finals against Jennifer Gal from the Netherlands a koka rating was enough. Only the final against the Belgian Gella Vandecaveye won Emoto through Ippon, after 3:05 minutes Yuko Emoto was Olympic champion.

In 1997, at the end of her international career, Yuko Emoto finished second at the South Asian Games, after losing to Jung Sung-sook in the final.
