YAKARI - Friends for Life is a children's musical by the composer Thomas Schwab from Bernkastel-Kues . It is based on the Yakari comic stories by the writer André Jobin (Job) and the draftsman Claude de Ribaupierre (Derib). Like the comic, the musical tells the story of the Sioux Indian boy Yakari and his friend, the horse Kleiner Donner. The focus is on values such as courage, respect and friendship. The musical premiered on April 1, 2013 in the Liederhalle in Stuttgart. Film and theater scholar Andreana Clemenz is directing. Alex Burgos is responsible for the choreography. In 2013 and 2014 the musical was performed 74 times in Germany and Switzerland as well as on the open-air stage in Elspe. In 2015 a tour through 30 cities with a total of 58 shows follows.

action

Yakari, the little Indian boy, wants to prove to his father Kühner Blick that he is a great Indian. Firmly convinced of his plan, he decides to catch the fastest pony, Kleiner Donner. Yakari and his friends Rainbow and Little Badger set out to look for the pony. Unnoticed by the friends, the little beaver linden tree sneaks into the canoe with which they are traveling. The pony Kleiner Donner, who is in danger in a rocky ravine and threatened with Dracula, is rescued by Yakari. Completely beside himself, the Yakari reveals Kühner Blick to his father for this deed. Worried that his father will not recognize him as a great Indian, Yakari remains sad and alone in the gorge.

His totem Großer Adler accompanies him during this hour and gives him his most beautiful feather for his selfless act of having freed Kleiner Donner. The Great Eagle's feather gives Yakari the gift of understanding and talking to animals. Happy about this valuable gift, he helps a very cold and clumsy pelican, together with Rainbow and Little Badger, and makes friends with a grizzly. The disappointment of his father, Kühner Blick, makes Yakari decide again to catch Little Thunder and ride it into the village as a big Indian. Just as he made this decision, Yakari learns from Big Eagle that the wolves have captured Little Thunder and that only he can save the pony from the wolves' clutches. Because his unique ability enables Yakari to mediate between humans and animals. Yakari wants to move into the Wolf Canyon, determined to face his fear of the wolves. The wolves interrupt the harmonious coexistence of the other animals and all of them flee. The courageous Yakari overcomes his fear and makes a pact with Dreifuss, the leader of the wolves. Yakari promises the pack that the Indians will stop hunting the wolves. The wolves respond to this Indian promise and release Kleiner Donner. Overjoyed, Yakari rides Kleiner Donner into the village and is recognized by his father Kühner Blick in front of the whole tribe for his heroic deeds as a great Indian. After their adventures together, Yakari and Kleiner Donner become friends for life.

Press reviews

  • “Thank you to the earth” is the name of the powerful prelude in an arrangement of modern pop and Indian sounds that is well worth listening to and which is also convincing in other titles. Preserving the environment, respecting everything that is alive: This runs like a red thread through the piece, which takes the audience into the vastness of North America. "(Nicole Weisheit-Zenz, Rhein Main Presse, April 22, 2013)
  • “The makers of the musical have lovingly implemented the stories of the Indian boy for the stage and enriched them with music, song and dance. The result is an entertaining piece about the adventures of Yakari and his friends, the Indian children Rainbow and Little Badger. Yakari's horse, Kleiner Donner, and many other animals delighted young and old alike. (...) Playing on the stage with singing and dancing is demanding, so all children's roles were filled with adults. That didn't harm the musical. "(Marc Miertzschke, Erfurter Allgemeine, April 19, 2013)
  • "The audience was sometimes asked to dance, the whole hall was in motion (...) The spark of enthusiasm that the artists and participants radiated jumped over and carried away." (Johannes Baumert, Wolfsburger Nachrichten)
  • “How much you rely on the recognition value is not only shown by the set design: atmospheric cartoon landscapes are projected onto transparent curtains, which are strongly based on the original drawings. And Yakari and his friends also look original like in the template. All of this creates a collective XXL KI.KA television feeling. But when the tribe started their first song 'Thanks to the earth' to a dull drum, an astonished murmur went through the crowd: Hups, they are singing! How impressive music, dance and drama can be live on a stage becomes apparent during the almost two-hour show only after a warm-up phase, but then things really take off. (...) "(Marion Klötzer, Badische Zeitung, April 6, 2013)
  • "Musically, 'Yakari' has a lot to offer: Every song is different, basically suitable for children's room pop, but decorated with jazz sounds, rock or a beaver blues including a blossom sax solo by Lindenbaum." (Thomas Kölsch, Bonner Generalanzeiger, April 27, 2013)
