Yallahs , also spelled Yallahs Bay or Yallahs Village , is a small town on the southeast coast of Jamaica . It is in County Surrey , in whose Parish Saint Thomas . Yallahs is the 22nd largest city on the island. In 2010 the population was 7,653 people. The city is 0 meters above sea level. About three miles from Yallahs is the District of Heartsease . A religious sect lives in this tiny place, which dresses in wide robes and brightly colored scarves around their heads. In their ceremonies, they dance to hypnotic-rhythmic drum music in a trance.

history

Yallahs was founded in the late 16th century. The origin of their name is uncertain. The most reliable sources say the city was named after a privateer captain named Captain Yallahs, who lived in the region until 1671. In 1692 a strong earthquake struck the region. The Twin Salt Ponds bay and the associated lakes were created.

Geography and economy

North of the city are the Twin Salt Ponds . The sea water it contains is 15 times more saline than the Atlantic . The salt obtained there is an important commodity and makes the city the largest salt supplier on the island. The air around this bay and its individual ponds is rich in hydrogen sulfide . This is caused by bacteria that live in the salt ponds. In 1902 it was reported that the smell of hydrogen sulfide could be smelled as far as the capital Kingston .

The bay forms one from the mainland and the other from a tongue of land created by the earthquake called Yallahs Pond . There is a large bird sanctuary there. West of Yallahs, the Yallahs River flows into the Atlantic Ocean.
