Yann-Benjamin Kugel (2009)

Yann-Benjamin Kugel (born December 16, 1979 in Troisdorf ) is a German fitness trainer and was the athletic trainer for the German national soccer team until February 2018 .

Career

Kugel studied at the German Sport University in Cologne and sports science in Costa Rica . He then worked in Spain from 2007.

In summer 2008, Kugel was employed by Werder Bremen as a fitness trainer for the professional team. The management reacted to the poor fitness of the players and the resulting susceptibility to muscle injuries in the preseason. Aaron Hunt , whom he himself cites as a prime example of his work, had Kugel complete additional training sessions with exercises for the thigh and gluteus muscles to combat his knee problems. These had previously thrown him back again and again. Hunt himself assessed the work with Kugel positively and said he felt "really fit and fresh" again.

For the soccer World Cup 2010 , the DFB signed Kugel as the fourth fitness trainer of the German national team. The contact came through Shad Forsythe , who knew Kugel from two training courses at Mark Verstegen's company, Athletes' Performance in the United States . The tabloid Bild linked Kugel's commitment to the DFB with the importance of Mesut Özil, who was then Bremen . Kugel was permanently employed by the DFB after the World Cup. Initially, he also worked for Werder Bremen at the same time.

At the European Football Championship in 2012 , he looked after the German team together with Forsythe and Darcy Norman . They were supported in the preparation by Mark Verstegen. The fourth fitness trainer should enable individual training units for individual players in preparation.

In April 2012, Kugel announced that he did not want to extend his contract with Werder Bremen, which was running out at the end of the season. He explained that he wanted to devote himself to new tasks in addition to his work at the DFB. Kugel's successor at Werder Bremen was Reinhard Schnittker, who previously worked at the University of Paderborn . On July 9, 2012, the reigning Austrian champions FC Red Bull Salzburg announced that Kugel would be the new athletic trainer in Roger Schmidt's team .

Since June 18, 2013, in addition to his work in the national team, Kugel has been responsible for the athletics department of 1. FC Köln and has been responsible for the licensed players as well as conceptually for the youth teams of 1. FC Köln. On November 28, 2017 it became known that Kugel would no longer look after the active professional team due to a lack of trust with head coach Peter Stöger . Since June 2018 Kugel has been a manager at Fastward.Football, an agency he co-founded for sporting "performance management". In addition, he has been "head of performance" at SK Gaming since August 2019 and in the same position at the Israel Football Association since September 2019.
