Jehud ( Hebrew יְהוּד, Arabic ييهود, partly also listed as Yehud or Yahud ) is a city in Israel . It is located 20 km east of Tel Aviv , in the immediate vicinity of Ben Gurion International Airport . In 2018, 29,930 residents lived in Jehud on an area of 4.1 km².

history

Jehud was "named after a biblical place of the tribe Dan ( Jos 19.45  EU ), which was probably in the southern area of today's city".

In 2003, Jehud was united with the neighboring community of Newe Monosson . The latter was given a kind of independence and can take care of many of its own affairs. The mayor of Jehuds became the joint mayor of the new town called Jehud-Newe Monosson.

Compared to other Israeli cities, Jehud has an average quality of life.

Assault in Yehud

On October 12, 1953, an unarmed Jewish mother and her two children were killed in Yehud in an attack by Jordanian-Arab intruders from the West Bank . The Israeli government decided to retaliate against the village of Qibya in the West Bank near the Green Line, which was then annexed by Jordan in violation of international law . The operation, known as the Qibya massacre , led to a drastic decline in Palestinian attacks on Israel , but was also heavily criticized internationally.
