history

Yei was located in the contested area of the Civil War in South Sudan and was captured by the SPLA rebels on March 10, 1997 . After the takeover, Yei served as the headquarters and base of the SPLA troops. Due to the proximity to the border, the Ugandan LRA also attacked the civilian population. After encountering resistance from the Didinga in Chukudum, the SPLA made Yei their new headquarters for Central Equatoria.

On September 15, 1998, a hospital in Yei was bombed by the Sudanese Air Force. On November 22, 2000, the Yei market square was bombed by the Sudanese Air Force, killing 14 people.

economy

As a result of the Civil War, infrastructure, trade and commerce were poorly developed for a long time. After the peace agreement concluded in 2005 between the government in Khartoum and the SPLA , there were the first signs of a small economic boom.

Yei is located in a year-round rainy region. The good water supply allows intensive agricultural use of the area. Coffee , cassava , corn and sugar cane , for example , are grown on the fertile cultivation areas around Yei . The development of agricultural infrastructure is specifically promoted.

Yei has branches of three international commercial banks: Equity Bank (South Sudan), Ivory Bank and Kenya Commercial Bank (South Sudan).

Transport links

During the long war of independence, Yei's infrastructure was badly damaged. Since the signing of the ceasefire agreement in 2005 and the complete independence of South Sudan in July 2011, the transport network has been intensively repaired.

In 2003 the road between Yei and Kaya on the border with Uganda , financed by HABITAT and the United Nations World Food Program , was renewed. This cut the travel time to Kaya from five hours to one hour. The US development agency USAID restored the power grid and street lighting in Yei.

Today, Yei is the central transport hub in the south-west of the country. The city also has an airfield about 6 km northeast of the center. A commercial airline from Uganda and the Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) fly to it three times a week .

Education and social institutions

There are currently more than 60 elementary and secondary schools in Yei. Most of these are run by local churches or mission agencies in South Sudan. Yei is also home to the Yei Agricultural and Mechanical University .
