The club during construction on surrounding high-rise buildings (1972)

The Yellow Submarine , also known as the "Shark Disco", opened on April 2nd, 1971 as part of a complex that was completed in 1973 by the Schwabylon shopping and leisure center . The conception of the discotheque was a sensation in Europe at the time, and it became famous all over Germany overnight. The Yellow Submarine was located south of the Schwabylon and became a bestseller for the attached hotel. In the first few years, the discotheque recorded peak sales. The name referred to the Beatles song from 1968.

Amateur film (1978), beginning with the Yellow Submarine

The three-story club was surrounded by an aquarium like a kind of diving bell, through portholes one could see 36 sharks and some giant turtles that were caught in the Gulf of Mexico and swam in 650,000 liters of seawater. The club was reminiscent of a submarine or a ship, with leather seats, a railing, and a staircase that connected three floors in an open space nine meters high. Admission was six DM and offered shark fin soup and grilled shark.

The club was later renamed Aquarius and closed in 1982. The building was demolished in 2013 for the construction of the Schwabinger Tor after an unsuccessful initiative tried to save the discotheque as a monument .
