The Yellowhead Pass is a pass across the North American Continental Divide in the Canadian Rockies . It is on the border between the provinces of Alberta and British Columbia in Jasper National Park and Mount Robson Provincial Park . The pass and the lying near Yellowhead Lake are by Pierre Bostonais named, a blond-haired Métis - Trapper nicknamed Tete Jaune (French for "blond" or "Yellow Head"). Because of the many hides that were transported over the pass at the time of the trappers, it was also known as the Leather Pass .

Compared to the surrounding mountains, which sometimes reach a height of over 3,000 m, the pass height is relatively low at 1,131 m. The incline is moderate on both sides, the ascent is evenly distributed over a longer distance. When planning the first transcontinental route of the Canadian Pacific Railway , the commissioned engineer, Sandford Fleming , recommended the Yellowhead Pass as a mountain crossing in his drafts in 1870. The decision was made in favor of the Kicking Horse Pass further south because of the shorter distance, despite the more difficult terrain .

As a second transcontinental railroad connection, the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway , located further north, was built between 1919 and 1914 . It runs over the Yellowhead Pass as a mountain crossing and connects Edmonton with the port city of Prince Rupert . This route is now operated by the Canadian National Railway . The Yellowhead Highway also runs over the pass .

Under the name Yellowhead Pass National Historic Site of Canada , the pass was added to the directory of the National Historic Site of Canada on December 12, 2008 .
