Yeni Asya (New Asia) is a Turkish daily newspaper published by the publishing house of the same name in Istanbul . Yeni Asya International appears as an international weekly edition in Cologne . The newspaper is regarded as the organ of an important current within the Islamic Nurculuk movement, which refers to the ideas of Said Nursî .
history
In 1962, supporters of the Nurculuk movement published the weekly newspaper İrşad (for example: “ Showing the Way”) their first publication, which, however, did not last long for political and economic reasons. After further magazines, some of which failed economically and some were banned, Yeni Asya finally appeared as a daily newspaper in 1970 . After the military coup in 1980 , the publication of the paper was banned several times.
positioning
At times, Yeni Asya is said to have connections to Fethullah Gülen . This originally came from the Nurculuk movement, before it split off with the supporters he had gathered around him in Izmir and founded his own community, the Gülen movement . However, those in charge of Yeni Asya deny any links to the Gülen movement. They would reject Gülen's nationalism and the fixation on one person, which is characteristic of the Gulen movement. Gülen's positive reference to Kemalism and his fixation on the state are also incompatible with Nursî's ideas. It is true that Nurs î also advocated that Muslims should work together with Christians in the fight against “unbelief and immorality” . However, Gülen had extended this to Jews and other religions, so that the original meaning of the dialogue idea, namely the fight against “unbelief”, was lost.
In the conflict between the Justice and Recovery Party (AKP) and the Gülen movement, Yeni Asya opposed neither side. The newspaper always kept its distance from the AKP. For example, before the general election in June 2015 , Yeni Asya called for the liberal - conservative Democratic Party to be elected because it stands in the tradition of the old center-right parties DP and Justice Party (AP). However, some independent observers believe that despite these calls , the grassroots community behind Yeni Asya is largely voting for the AKP.
