Yetisports is a series of games of skill on the computer that the Austrian Chris Hilgert invented. Characteristic for all versions of this game is the constant presence of a Yeti (main character) and several penguins .

In the games implemented using Flash , the Yeti makes a virtual trip around the world, which leads him from Antarctica to Australia , Africa , Hawaii , Austria , South America and finally to the Himalayas .

There are ten official parts (so-called parts ), there are also fake versions and various bonus games on the Internet. While the Yetisports produced by "Edelweiss Medienwerkstatt" was initially only available as a mini-game as free freeware , later commercial, buyable versions and various by-products supplemented the offer.

development

Pingu Throw , first published in January 2004, spread quickly over the Internet and was put online again by fans in a partially changed form (e.g. as a bloody Pingu Throw Gore version ), which further increased the game's popularity.

The manufacturer of the game then converted its website to a professionally designed form, decided to publish further parts and, among other things, offered an online highscore list, which led to great popularity and intense competitions for the best scores beyond the German-speaking national borders . At the time when new parts were released, the manufacturer's servers were overloaded and could hardly be reached.

The first two "YetiSports" online games were already played more than 200 million online and in September 2004 the game was played by more than 250 million players and achieved cult status. For CNET , the game is among the ten most addicting online flash games ever made.

The manufacturer knew how to use the hype surrounding the Yetisports series and keep it up: For example, fans were asked to send in pictures and game ideas, surveys were carried out, forums to discuss game tips and strategies were put online, a Yeti song was published as a maxi CD , created various fan articles and also concluded contracts with other providers who ported Yetisports as a paid version to cell phones or game consoles or published them graphically improved as a purchase version.

Today you can get the individual Yetisports parts as offline versions by downloading for Windows and Mac OS , the games can also be played online in order to compete with other players in the highscore top 1000 lists, which are now updated in real time . In order to put a stop to cheaters and also to enable mergers of Yetisports players into individual teams, a compulsory free registration is required.

All games in the Yetisports series in the offline version include an advertising message from the mobile phone manufacturer Sony Ericsson before the game starts .

Contents of the individual parts

Official parts

  • Part 1: Pingu Throw : An unlimited number of penguins stand on a rock. The player must now try to hit the penguins that jump from the rock with a mouse click as far as possible with a baseball bat-like club.
  • Part 2: Orca Slap : Here the player must try to push the penguins, which are thrown into the air by an orca , as centrally as possible onto a target with snowballs.
  • Part 3: Seal Bounce : In this version the player has to try to throw the penguins as high as possible in a kind of ice crevice. Different animals on both sides can help to achieve greater heights.
  • Part 4: Albatross Overload : In this game, the scenery has been relocated to a beach, where the Yeti tries to move the penguins as far away from the starting point as possible. To do this, he uses albatrosses, on whose backs the penguins can land and whose wings the player can control with clever mouse clicks.
  • Part 5: Flamingo Drive : Here the game takes place in a savannah . Again it is a matter of moving the penguins as far away from the starting point as possible. This is now achieved with a flamingo that is handled like a golf club. Other animals and plants are on the way: vultures carry the penguin out of sight when fired, giraffes can fling the penguin further, snakes catapult the penguin in the respective direction when touched.
  • Part 6: Big Wave : Here the player has to try to throw the penguins jumping out of the water with his Yeti surfing on a wave and to make as good and high jumps as possible. For the first time, control is no longer via the mouse, but via the keyboard.
  • Part 7: Snowboard Free Ride : The player must try to reach the goal on a snowboard faster than the computer-controlled penguins with his Yeti. While driving, stunts can be done for which the player gets extra points.
  • Part 8: Jungle Swing : This is about making the Yeti hop from branch to branch by means of clever mouse clicks, whereby it reaches a higher and higher level.
  • Part 9: Final Spit : This version is a grouse- like shooter in which the penguins have to be shot with llama spit.
  • Part 10: Icicle Climb : In this version, which was released at the same time as the game's second birthday, the player must try to shoot the penguins as high as possible by throwing icicles with the Yeti, who is standing on a swinging spider web, on which the penguin jumps and thus gets higher and higher.

Bonus games and special editions

  • Part 1: Pingu Throw Ylympics : This is a special version of Part 1: Pingu Throw , the scenery has been relocated to Athens .
  • Part 1: Pingu Throw SE : Almost identical to Part 1 - Pingu Throw , but the keyboard is now included in the game and the player can use various keys to influence the flight path of the penguin.
  • Part 1: Pingu Throw Multiuser : Another modification of Part 1 - Pingu Throw for two players, in which they face each other and play a tennis-like game.
  • Yetisports - Tournament : This version is a mere summary of the official parts 1 to 5.
  • Bonus Part: Stagedive : As the title of this version reveals, the Yeti has to jump from a stage into a crowd of penguins . The aim of the game is to get as far away from the starting point of the stage as possible.
