Yoav Gelber

Yoav Gelber ( Hebrew יואב גלבר; Born September 15, 1942 ) is an Israeli officer ( lieutenant colonel ) and military historian .

Life

His grandfather was the historian Nathan Michael Gelber . In his youth he was a member of the Rafi party . Yoav joined the Israel Defense Forces in 1961 as a paratrooper . He was used in the Yom Kippur War and last held the rank of lieutenant colonel. Yoav studied Jewish history at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem ( Ph.D. 1977). From 1987 to 2000 he headed the Herzl Institute for Research and Studies of Zionism at the University of Haifa and since 2000 the Nevzlin Center of Jewish Peoplehood at the Interdisciplinary Center (IDC) in Herzlia . He was visiting professor at the University of Texas at Austin and is currently Professor of History at the University of Haifa. Yoav specializes in the history of the Israel Defense Forces and is considered a critic of the " New Israeli Historians ".
