Nathan Michael Gelber
Nathan Michael Gelber (born May 27, 1891 in Lemberg , Austria-Hungary ; died September 24, 1966 in Jerusalem ) was an Austro-Israeli historian of early Zionism and Polish Jewry and a Zionist functionary.
Life
Nathan Michael Gelber, who was raised in a strictly religious manner by his parents, was heavily involved in the Zionist movement from his youth. He was a co-founder of the Zionist academic youth organization in Galicia and the Hatechiya in Vienna .
After studying philosophy at Vienna and Humboldt University in Berlin , he received his doctorate in Vienna in 1916. During the First World War he was an officer in the Austro-Hungarian army. From 1918 to 1921 he was general secretary of the East Galician delegation of Waad Le'umi in Vienna, from 1921 to 1930 general secretary of the Zionist organization in Austria.
In 1927, 1929 and 1933 he was General Secretary of the Zionist Congresses , and from 1931 to 1940 he was the representative of Keren Hajessod for Central Europe in Vienna and Jerusalem. In 1934 he emigrated to Palestine .
From 1940 to 1954, he was director of the Keren Hajessod headquarters in Jerusalem. After being wounded in an attack on the Jewish Agency's Jerusalem office, he retired in 1954.
Nathan Michael Gelber worked on the Encyclopaedia Judaica and the Jewish Lexicon . Between 1921 and 1931 he took over the editorial management of the Wiener Morgenzeitung and the weekly Die Demokratie . He was also an employee of many renowned magazines such as B. the monthly for the history and science of Judaism and the magazine for statistics and demography .
