Yola (born Yolanda Quartey in Bristol in 1983 ) is an English musician, singer and songwriter. She was the singer of the band Phantom Limb , with whom she released her first album in 2010, and sang as a background singer for Massive Attack , The Chemical Brothers and Iggy Azalea, among others . Her first solo album Walk Through Fire was released in 2019 , for which she received four nominations at the 2020 Grammy Awards , including one for the Grammy Award for Best New Artist .
biography
Yola grew up in a poor family where music was forbidden. From 2005 to 2013 she sang in the country and soul band Phantom Limb, which released the album Phantom Limb in 2008 and the second album The Pines in 2012 .
In 2016 Yola released her first solo EP, Orphan Offering . The debut album as a solo artist followed in 2019 with Walk Through Fire . The album was written, recorded and produced in Dan Auerbach's Easy Eye Studio in Nashville , where it was produced and cast by Auerbach. The songs were created in collaboration between Yola and Auerbach with contributions from Bobby Wood , Pat McLaughlin and Dan Penn . The songs were recorded, among others, by bassist Dave Roe, harmonica player Charlie McCoy and the former drummer of the Memphis Boys, Gene Crisman, and Bobby Wood on the piano. There are also vocal recordings by Vince Gill , Molly Tuttle , Ronnie McCoury and Stuart Duncan .
With the album, Yola received four nominations for the Grammy Awards 2020 . The song Faraway Look was nominated for the Grammy Awards for Best American Roots Performance and Best American Roots Song , the album was nominated for Best Americana Album, and she herself was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best New Artist . However, she couldn't win any of the Grammys.
