Yossi Melman

Yossi Melman (* 1950 in Poland ) is an Israeli author and journalist .

Melman emigrated to Israel in 1957, where he joined the Hashomer Hatzair youth organization . He later graduated from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem with a degree in history and international relations and was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University . He is a correspondent for the liberal daily Haaretz for the military and secret service.

Political opinions

Melman stated that he sees himself on the left and that Israel must leave the Occupied Territories to live in peace with a Palestinian state. However, he is also of the opinion that the Palestinians should not be given the right to return, as this would nullify the idea of a two-state solution in the minds of the Israelis.

In an interview with the Austrian newspaper Der Standard on Iran and its nuclear program , when asked whether he was critical of the negotiations between the Austrian company OMV and Iran , he replied as follows: “Although I understand the Austrian dilemma in terms of energy interests: gas -The OMV deal should have been postponed or at least negotiated differently. Austria should have asked for something in return, concessions. It should have been a lot tougher. In general, we are far too yielding to Iran - just think of the Swiss President , who walks around Tehran with the headscarf. The signal is: We respect you, but don't even expect you to respect us. Austria should follow the German example: Germany is the best ally of Israel, better than the USA, because there are no interests attached to German support for Israel. "

In an article for Haaretz, Melman said that if he were Benjamin Netanyahu's security advisor, he would advise attacking Iran.

Awards

Melman won the 2008 Sokolow Prize in Print and Electronic Media in memory of Nachum Sokolow for his report on a Jordanian Palestinian illegally detained by American, Israeli and Jordanian security services.
