Brand name, logo and owner

The brand name Yota refers to the Greek letter Iota for internet. The logo shows a person doing a handstand and is intended to symbolize that Yota looks at familiar things from a different angle.

Yota is a brand of the Russian company Scartel, of which Sergei Adonjew has been the managing director since 2008. The company's headquarters are in Saint Petersburg .

history

In June 2009, Yota entered the Russian market as a new provider of mobile broadband internet access. Since the fixed network structure there is still much worse than in other countries, mobile connections are of particular importance in Russia. For a flat rate of 1400 rubles (approx. 35 euros) per month, Yota offers mobile broadband internet access without any data restrictions (the current ADSL tariffs in Russia are 300 to 1200 rubles).

That is why Yota reached over 250,000 customers with its fast and inexpensive 4G network (WiMAX) in November 2009 and achieved an operating profit of 6 million dollars in the first half of the business year. At the end of June 2010, Yota had 600,000 customers in the five major Russian cities of Moscow , Saint Petersburg, Ufa , Krasnodar and Sochi . The company's profit for the first half of 2010 was $ 66 million.

In May 2010, however - after investing around 500 million dollars - Yota surprisingly announced its withdrawal from WiMAX technology.

In Kazan , an even faster mobile LTE network for a million people was set up in just two months and with a cost of 20 million US dollars. By the end of 2010, Yota wanted to invest a further 100 million US dollars in the new LTE network in Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Ufa, Krasnodar and Sochi. In the summer of 2010, however, it became known that the Russian regulatory authority had revoked the company's license to use certain frequencies for LTE. This was justified with a violation of the law, as the existing license only allowed the use of WiMAX, but not that of LTE.

At the end of 2010, Yota had offices with a total of around 1200 employees in Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Managua (Nicaragua) and London . In the centers of the Belarusian cities of Minsk and Grodno , an LTE network was set up on December 1, which is also planned for the cities of Mogilev , Brest and Gomel . The same is planned for Peru, where the subsidiary Yota Del Peru has the only license in the country for mobile Internet access over 22 MHz for the whole country and 78 MHz for the Lima region . In October 2015, Bermuda- based, Hong Kong-listed investment company REX Global Entertainment acquired 64.9% of the shares in Yota Holding Limited from Telconet Capital Limited for US $ 100 million. Yota Holding Limited and 10% MTH Limited continue to hold 25.1%.

Services

In addition to the actual Internet access, Yota offers various mobile services such as mobile Internet protocol television , video-on-demand (in Russia exclusively films from Universal and Disney Studios), an online music shop with a catalog of over 700,000 titles, and a photo weblog -Portal.
