Margarete Eriksdotter Wasa (* 1497 , † December 31, 1536 in Reval (now Tallinn) ), (Swedish. Margareta Eriksdotter Vasa, also Margarete von Hoya ) was a Swedish noblewoman and sister of King Gustav I of Sweden .

Life

Margareta was born to Erik Johannsson Wasa and Cecilia Månsdotter Eka . On March 30, 1516, she married the nobleman and councilor Joakim Brahe , who was killed together with her father in the Stockholm bloodbath in 1520 . Margarete as well as her mother, grandmother, her sisters and her aunt Christina Gyllenstierna were captured and locked in the so-called Blue Tower in Copenhagen .

After her brother Gustav was elected King of Sweden in 1523, Margarete returned to her homeland in 1524 after her release. On January 15, 1525, she married the German count and military leader Johann von Hoya , who became governor of Vyborg .

During the count's feud , Johann von Hoya died on June 11, 1535 in a battle on Funen . After conflicts with her brother, Margarete left Sweden because she feared that he might have her sons killed. She died in Reval and was buried in the local cathedral .
