Per Brahe the Elder

Per Brahe the Elder (* 1520 , † 1590 on Stora Sundby , Södermanland ) was a Swedish Reichsdrost and Count of Visingsborg . He was the son of Joakim Brahe and Margaret Eriksdotter Wasa , Gustav Wasa's sister .

Life

In the year of his birth, his father and maternal grandfather were murdered in the Stockholm carnage . His mother was abducted to Denmark with her children , returned in 1524 and left Sweden again when she married her second husband, the Count of Hoya . She died in Reval in 1536 . From her he inherited the Rydboholm Castle , which her father had bequeathed to her. In 1537 Brahe was called back to Sweden by Gustav Wasa and only two years later he was chamber councilor and governor in Stockholm Palace . In 1540 Brahe received the Gudhem Monastery as a fief and later the island of Norra Ljusterö . He was given the title of Imperial Councilor in 1546 as a knight. In 1549 he married Beata Gustavsdotter Stenbock at Gripsholm Castle .

In 1561, after Erik XIV's coronation , he was raised to the rank of count and a year later received almost the entire island of Visingsö as a county. There he had a castle built, the aforementioned Visingsborg , which today only exists as a ruin. Brahe supported Erik XIV in restricting the power of the dukes and princes in the so-called Articles of Arboga . During Erik's reign he worked in his service both abroad and at home. However, neither his position as count, council secretary, supreme court master nor his relatives (cousin) with the king could protect him from the king's ruffles. His late arrival at the Diet in Uppsala in 1567 probably saved his life, as King Erik XIV had a large part of the Swedish aristocracy killed during the storm murders . After the storm murders and during Erik's mental disorders, Sweden was led by Sten Eriksson Leijonhufvud and Brahe. He only joined a rebellion of the dukes in 1568 when the prospects of success were considered certain. After Erik's dismissal he received from his brother and successor Johann III. In 1569 his county Visingsborg was enlarged and in the same year it was appointed Reichsdrost. However , Brahe had a tense relationship with Gustav Wasa's youngest son, Duke Karl , as he was involved in inheritance disputes with him, among other things. Although he was loyal to the royal family, he and the other councilors lost their favor from 1588 onwards. Before he died in 1590, Brahe also lost his position as Reichsdrost.

In terms of religion and beliefs, Brahe was viewed by many contemporaries as not steadfast. The Jesuit order had great expectations of him as he actively participated in Catholic life, but his will revealed that he had no Catholic tendencies at all.

Per Brahe the Elder had four sons, all of whom held high offices in the Swedish state. He is also the grandfather of Per Brahe the Younger .
