action
James Michael Andersen, the only son of Brenda Andersen, volunteers to serve with the parachutists . His mother Brenda wants to force him to give up his military career and go to college. Her husband and the father of James was a parachutist and died while jumping in the Vietnam War . Brenda drives to the base where James is being trained. She takes the place of a deserted woman and ends up in Sergeant Burke's unit.
Brenda's performance as a soldier is very poor, and Burke is thinking of moving the entire training train to an inhospitable area. Brenda finds her son and talks to him, but cannot convince him. She makes a bet with James: If she succeeds in training, James Michael should quit duty or at least be transferred to the ground crew. Then she practices very intensively, supported by a comrade who used to be a nun .
After a while, Brenda comes to terms with her son becoming a professional soldier. She wants to quit, but Burke convinces her to quit. He says he has never seen a soldier who works so hard. Brenda overcomes her fear and does her first parachute jump from an airplane.
