Youri Messen-Jashin (born January 27, 1941 in Arosa , Switzerland ) is a Latvian artist .

Life

Vouri Messen-Jaschin attended the National Art School in Paris , one of his teachers there was Robert Cami (1900-1973), and the École Pratique des Hautes Études at the Sorbonne , where he studied art history with Pierre Francastel.

From 1962 to 1965 he attended the École des Beaux-Arts in Lausanne . There he worked with the engraver and painter Ernest Pizotti. In 1964 he took part in the Expo 64 in Lausanne with kinetic glass and acrylic sculptures and worked for two years at the “Center de la gravure contemporaine” in Geneva . He later stayed in Zurich and expanded his painting skills with the painter Friedrich Kuhn (1926–1972).

From 1968 to 1970 he studied at the Högskolan för Design och Konsthantverk (HDK) in Gothenburg , where he experimented with kinetic textile objects. Working with the works of Jesús Rafael Soto , Carlos Cruz Diez and Julio Le Parc , he discovered his interest in Op Art and kinetic art . In Gothenburg he had the opportunity to incorporate movement and geometric shapes into his textiles and oil paintings. In the 1970s he lived in Hamburg, where he worked on various large-scale projects with northern German artists. 1970 designed the tapestry “More Light”, his only work in Pop Art style, which he realized in his Swiss studio in Zollikofen .

From 1970 to 1981 he settled in Bern . Architecture and the exploration of movement in architectural space, as well as Op Art and Kinetic Art, played an essential role in his paintings and sculptures. On the occasion of a stay in Caracas , his works were performed in the Ateneo de Caracas and at the VI Festival internacional de Teatro . Since 2000, Messen-Jashin has also turned to body art . In 2010, the Swiss Post issued a series of stamps showing three Op Art motifs by the artist.

His works can be found in museums and in private collections. He lives and works in Lausanne.
