Yuan Wang

Yuan Wang (born April 29, 1930 in Zhejiang Province, † May 14, 2021 in Beijing ) was a Chinese number theorist .

Wang was the son of the governor of Lanxi , who was secretary of Academia Sinica in the 1940s . Wang studied mathematics at Zhejiang University from 1949 to 1952 with Jian Gong Chen and Bu Quing Su. Then he was in the number theory group of Hua Luogeng at the Institute of Mathematics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences , where he became a professor in 1978 and was director of the Mathematics Institute from 1984 to 1987.

He made important contributions in analytical number theory to the area of ​​the Goldbach conjecture using sieving methods and the Hardy-Littlewood circle method, in Diophantine approximation and combinatorics as well as in mathematical statistics. With Hua Luogeng he developed high-dimensional block plans for the numerical integration on the unit cube, which was applied to test plans by the statistician Kai-Tai Fang and, through the cooperation of the two, led to the development of uniform test plans, which were used, for example, in computer simulations . With Fang he wrote a monograph on number theoretic methods in statistics.

In 1980 he became a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. With Pan Chengdong and Chen Jingrun, he received the national first class science award of China. From 1988 to 1992 he was President of the Chinese Mathematical Society, whose Hua Prize he received.
