Division 1 1978/79

The Division 1 1979/80 was the 42nd staging of the professional French football league. Master was the fifth time after 1965 of the FC Nantes .

The first matchday was July 26, 1979, the last matchday was May 27, 1980. From December 17th to January 18th there was a five-week winter break.

societies

Eligible to participate were those clubs that had finished the previous season no worse than 17th place, plus, as an exception, only a direct climber from the second division - second division champions FC Gueugnon waived because he was not ready to accept the required professional status, which resulted in Valenciennes in the League stayed - and the winner of the relegation round . Thus, the following teams played for the championship title this season:

Season course

The two-point rule applied ; in the event of a tie, the goal difference was decisive for the placement.

Saint-Étienne, who finally wanted to win a championship again after three "untitled years" and had invested heavily in this ( Platini , Rep ), fought head-to-head with Monaco in the first half of the season. With the renewed offensive strength, however - in particular due to Piazza's departure, the Verts had 50 goals conceded at the end (Nantes and Monaco only 30 each) - a loss of stability in the defense, so that the Monegasque topped the table in December with three points; one point behind was FC Nantes. Last year's champion Strasbourg, on the other hand, was "the big absentee in the title fight" in the second half of the season, while "the big surprise Sochaux" - the team from Franche-Comté had consistently relied on players from their own youth department, who had been finalists in the Coupe Gambardella in 1975 - joined the leadership troika in the spring of 1980. At the same time, Monaco ran out of steam, and at the end of April Nantes took the lead, which was only one point before matchday 36, when Nantes and Sochaux met. In this decisive top game, the Bretons , unbeaten in the championship at home for four years - last home defeat: on May 15, 1976 against Paris SG - prevailed 3-2, won their last two matches and became champions for the fifth time in 15 years . For Sochaux, the runner-up title remained the best position in 27 years and qualification for the UEFA Cup, in which the FCS advanced to the semi-finals the following year .

In the bottom of the table, newcomer Brest was mainly due to his disastrous performances in the opposing stadiums - there were only two draws in 17 defeats, and Brest's "one-man attack" Dragutin Vabec scored five goals - early, and Marseille did not have either the quality required to stay in the league. Lyon, however, was able to assert itself in the subsequent barrages against second division Olympique Avignon . For the following season , FC Tours and AJ Auxerre were promoted to two clubs that had never been represented in Division 1 before.
